’42 Cinderblock Charmer
From Classic Charmer to Dream Retreat: Our Transformation of a 1942 Cinderblock Home
Who says you need to add on to make a house feel brand new? We just took a quaint 1942 cinderblock home, brimming with character, and turned it into a perfect haven for soon-to-be retirees—without adding a single square foot! This two-bedroom, one-bath gem with a spacious back den is now a three-bedroom, three-and-a-half-bath retreat. And yes, we kept all of its unique charm along the way!
Preserving the Heart of the Home
Our goal was to honor the house’s history while reimagining it for modern comfort. We made sure to reuse those beautiful, original doors—their rich wood grains tell stories of years gone by. And the hardwood floors? They were laid over 60 years ago, but after a careful restoration, they gleam like new! These touches keep the house feeling timeless, inviting, and deeply rooted in its own story.
A Layout That Works for Today (and Tomorrow!)
One of the best parts of this transformation was finding a way to add another bedroom and bath without altering the footprint. The rear den became the anchor for this new design, allowing us to reconfigure the layout so that every inch works hard for the homeowners. Now they have not only ample space for guests but also a gorgeous en-suite setup, perfect for when family comes to visit.
The Bath and Beyond
With three and a half baths, there’s plenty of room to accommodate all the grandkids, friends, and anyone else who stops by! Each bathroom got its own special attention, from custom tiling to fixtures chosen for both function and flair. You’ll find subtle nods to the home’s vintage roots, like retro-inspired tile patterns and classic finishes that blend old with new beautifully.
The Finished Product
Seeing this house come together has been such a joy. By preserving its original character and maximizing every square foot, we’ve created a space that’s truly special. It’s modern yet classic, and it perfectly balances the warmth of the old with the convenience of the new.
Take a look for yourself—we couldn’t be prouder of how it turned out!
This renovation journey turned out better than we ever imagined, and we’re thrilled to see this piece of history ready for its next chapter.
